Project Information
To increase safety, connectivity, and accessibility along the Indiana Avenue corridor between downtown and the Indiana University campus, the City of Bloomington is considering traffic calming infrastructure, pedestrian crossing improvements, bus stop improvements, and protected bicycle infrastructure.
Project Area
- Interactive Project Area & Fatal and Serious Injury Crashes Map
- Southern Terminus: S Henderson St. & E Smith Ave.
- Northern Terminus: N Indiana Ave. & E 10th St.
Why Indiana Avenue?
- This corridor has experienced one of the highest amounts of severe traffic collisions in recent years within Bloomington. Between 2018 and 2023, there have been nine traffic collisions along this corridor resulting in severe injuries or fatalities. With a codified goal of eliminating all traffic deaths and severe injuries on City of Bloomington roadways by 2039, there is a duty to act now to improve safety for all road users.
- Indiana Avenue is an essential connector for all residents, bridging downtown and the Indiana University campus. In its current state, there are gaps in the bicycle, pedestrian, and transit network that can be improved. All road users should be able to access these areas safely of Bloomington regardless of transportation mode.
Potential Benefits
- Increased safety for all road users: Slowing traffic speeds increases safety for all street users inside and out of the vehicle.
- Connectivity: Highly visible pedestrian crossings and low-stress bicycle infrastructure provide much needed convenience and comfort to popular destinations.
- Accessibility: In conjunction with a separate ongoing project aimed to improve pedestrian infrastructure along this corridor, this project will construct ADA compliant infrastructure, such as curb ramps and adequately wide sidewalks.
- Downtown Revitalization: Working in conjunction with local businesses in and around the project area, this project can be a win-win for safe streets and downtown Bloomington vibrancy.
