Standards Compliance, Browsers and Resolution

The site has been built to comply with web standards guidelines. As such it is best viewed in a modern standards compliant browser such as Mozilla Firefox. The recommended resolution for viewing this site in visual browsers is 1024 x 768 pixels at 32bit (millions) color.

We have built a standards-based website in part to make it as accessible as possible. Our website uses XHTML and CSS. We have followed the W3C's Web Content Accessibility Guidelines in the creation of the website and web content. This website is also in compliance with US government usability standards (see http://www.usability.gov for additional information). We have also consulted with accessibility experts at IU's Adaptive Technology Center and with Bloomington's Council for Community Accessibility in the development of this website.

Accessible Website Content

Code and Formatting

These are some of our primary efforts in making our code accessible.

  • We use HTML headers and alt tags throughout our website and its framework to help website visitors using screen readers. No javascript is incorporated into the basic navigation of our site.
  • Much work has been done to make our tables easily readable by screen-readers, including the information used by our myBloomington application.
  • When searching the site using our search interface, there is a direct link to the search results, each listed as an individual heading, for screen readers

Languages

  • We have translated specific integral pages into Spanish to make our website more accessible to our Latino community. Users can toggle between languages through a drop-down menu whenever an alternative language is available for a webpage.

Other Features

  • File downloads include the file type, an icon, and size in the link to the file. If you find a page that is difficult to understand or navigate please contact our webmaster at webmaster@bloomington.in.gov.
  • Tool Tips accompany icons when text is not used to explain the icon.
