Infiltration is caused by damaged sewer pipes leaking rain water into the sanitary sewer system. Inflow is an improper, large source of water, like a downspout or sump pump, dumping excess rain water into the sanitary sewer system.
Both inflow and infiltration are important to be aware of as a homeowner or resident. The City of Bloomington utilities strives to keep costs low for customers by reducing sources of inflow and infiltration (I&I). We need support from residents to do their part in reducing I&I.
What you can do:
- Inspect your sump pump. Old sump pumps may run excessively and/or be connected to the sanitary sewer. Ensure your sump pump discharges into your yard.
- Ensure downspouts discharge properly. Your downspouts should have an outlet you can see above ground that leads away from your house.
- Keep landscaping away from pipes. Keep trees and landscaping away from sewer lateral lines to keep roots from damaging and breaking pipes.
