Pipe with crack leaking water, pipe with connection dumping in water

Infiltration is caused by damaged sewer pipes leaking rain water into the sanitary sewer system. Inflow is an improper, large source of water, like a downspout or sump pump, dumping excess rain water into the sanitary sewer system.

Both inflow and infiltration are important to be aware of as a homeowner or resident. The City of Bloomington utilities strives to keep costs low for customers by reducing sources of inflow and infiltration (I&I). We need support from residents to do their part in reducing I&I.

What you can do:

Inspect your sump pump- Old sump pumps may excessively run and/or be connected to the sanitary sewer. Ensure your sump pump discharges into your yard.

Ensure downspouts discharge properly- Your downspouts should have an outlet you can see above ground that leads away from your house.

Keep landscaping away from pipes- Keep trees and landscaping away from sewer lateral lines to keep roots from damaging and breaking pipes.
