The City of Bloomington announces Call for Artists for Duke Substation Walls Mural Project
The City of Bloomington, in partnership with Duke Energy, has announced a new public art project to place murals on the Duke Substation walls located at the northwest corner of W 11th St and N Rogers St. The City is issuing a call for artists to participate in the design and painting of the substation wall murals. These murals will serve as a way to bring dynamism and vibrancy to the surrounding Bloomington area.
The Duke Substation is surrounded by six large walls. Due to the size of the structure, this mural project will be carried out in multiple installations. The first mural will be installed on the southeast wall facing 11th St, east of Rogers St.
Selected artists/artist teams will work together to develop a mural design for the southeast wall that reflects the general theme of the project. The theme for the entire project is derived from a community-based survey and it consists of two major points:
- To highlight the natural surroundings of the Maple Heights neighborhood, and detailing nature and sustainability.
- To emphasize the diversity of personhood and create a sense of belonging within the Bloomington community
Each selected artist/artist team will be responsible for painting two of the six panes. The painting process includes a community paint day during fall 2023 in which volunteers will be invited to help paint alongside the artists.
Three artists/artist teams will be selected and compensated $3500 to paint two of the six 16’ x 16’ panels. Materials are covered separately by the City of Bloomington. Materials and artist compensation are covered with support from a generous grant from the Duke Foundation.
“We are delighted to be partnering with Duke on this substantial mural project” Mayor John Hamilton said. We look forward to working with talented artists to create mural designs that reflect the local community and act as a gateway to the surrounding areas.
