City Reports Eleven New COVID-19 Cases

Bloomington, Ind.–Eleven City workers have reported positive results of COVID-19 tests since the May 19 update, including three Public Works (DPW) employees, one Utilities (CBU) employee, two Bloomington Police Department (BFD) employees, one Parks and Recreation (Parks) employee, one Bloomington Housing Authority (BHA) employee, and three Bloomington Fire Department (BFD) employees. 

 

Details of the cases are as follows: 

 

One DPW employee who is asymptomatic received a positive COVID-19 test result on May 22. There were no close contacts. 

 

A second DPW employee started experiencing symptoms on May 18 and received a positive COVID-19 test result on May 22. There were no close contacts. 

 

A third DPW employee started experiencing symptoms on May 23 and received a positive COVID-19 test result on May 25. There were no close contacts.  

 

One CBU employee started experiencing symptoms on May 22 and received a positive COVID-19 test result on the same day. There were no close contacts.  

 

One BPD employee started experiencing symptoms on May 21 and received a positive COVID-19 test result on May 24. There were no close contacts.  

 

A second BPD employee started experiencing symptoms on May 22 and received a positive COVID-19 test result on May 24. There were no close contacts. 

 

One Parks employee started experiencing symptoms on May 24 and received a positive COVID-19 test result on May 25. Close contacts have been notified.

 

One BHA employee started experiencing symptoms on May 25 and received a positive COVID-19 test result on the same day. There were no close contacts. 

 

One BFD employee started experiencing symptoms on May 18 and received a positive COVID-19 test result on May 19. There were no close contacts. 

 

A second BFD employee started experiencing symptoms on May 21 and received a positive COVID-19 test result on May 22. There were no close contacts. 

 

A third BFD employee started experiencing symptoms on May 21 and received a positive COVID-19 test result on May 23. There were no close contacts. 

 

To date, 324 positive COVID-19 viral test results have been reported since the start of the pandemic by City workers, including those employed by the municipal corporations that operate the water utility (CBU), transit system (Bloomington Transit), and public housing (Bloomington Housing Authority). Additionally, COVID-19 was listed among the causes of death of one City worker.

City of Bloomington Utilities continues its weekly COVID-19 wastewater sampling program. While it is presently in the early stages of development, wastewater sampling has been proposed as a future “early warning” methodology. As of May 16, the most recent date for which data is available, sample concentrations were 10 gene copies/100mL at the Dillman plant and 3700 gene copies/100mL at the Blucher Poole plant.
