History

Sister city, county and state affiliations began after World War II, and were developed into a national initiative by President Eisenhower, who proposed a people-to-people program at the White House in 1956. Originally part of the National League of Cities, Sister Cities International (SCI) became a separate nonprofit organization in 1967 due to its growth in popularity.
