Staff Assistant Construction & Grounds

Position Description

Incumbent works under the supervision of the Operations Superintendent as a member of a two-person work crew. Incumbent directly supervises the daily work routine of one other temporary full time person, (Laborer II Construction and Grounds). The incumbent will be expected to complete a job task without direct supervision. Incumbent performs a wide variety of duties and tasks related to upkeep and maintenance, and the installation and repair of new and existing parks and facilities. Additional duties include:

  • Tree cutting, brush and debris removal, material hauling, turf repair, leaf raking, painting and other related duties as assigned.
  • Construction, repair and maintenance of playgrounds.
  • Construction and related duties such as hauling and spreading wood chips and gravel, pouring and finishing concrete, roofing, and fencing projects.
  • Hauling, lifting, and loading of heavy materials.
  • Installing and repairing park signs, benches, tables, and other equipment.
  • Removing litter, trash, and other debris from assigned areas as directed.
  • Setting up and dismantling set-ups of tables, chairs, tents, stages, etc. for special events as needed.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Training/Special Skills

Previous experience and working knowledge and skill in the safe operation of general construction equipment and tools to include power tools, hand tools, woodworking machines, chainsaws, concrete finishing tools, and other related tools and carpentry equipment.

  • Must be self-motivated, and have the ability to interact and work well with the public and other employees.
  • Must be reliable, punctual, have the ability to follow oral and written direction, and be capable of performing physically demanding work.
  • Valid Driver’s License. Good driving record.
  • Class E laborer would have to possess previous experience in construction, plumbing, electrical, or some other form of building trade.

Physical Effort/Working Conditions

Must be in good physical condition. Moderate to strenuous physical effort is exerted by the employee in the setup and operation of equipment; including frequent bending, stooping, and the movement of extremities to operate equipment and perform work tasks. Moderate to strenuous physical effort is frequently required for extended periods of time in the lifting, loading, and transporting of construction materials. Employee must be physically capable of lifting weights in excess of 50 pounds. Employee performs duties in and out of doors, in varying weather conditions, and is periodically exposed to work sites with traffic, noise, dust, and vehicle and equipment fumes.

Hours

8 hours per day, 7:30 a.m.–3:30 p.m. Some weekends may be required. 40–hour work week, except during periods of inclement weather. Employees under age 18 are subject to restrictions on both hours and prohibited occupations.

Season

March 16–December 6, 2026. Term of employment not to exceed nine months.

Salary

$18.40–$18.50 per hour
