Bloomington Parks and Recreation's "Great Outdoors" programs introduce people of all ages to the mystery and beauty of our natural world.
All Great Outdoor program registration fees are per person, unless otherwise noted. Children under age 12 years must be accompanied by a registered adult. Programs occur both inside and outside, so please dress for the weather.
Stand Up Paddle Board Programs:
SUP for Teens
This class is geared specifically for teens, with peers of a similar age group. It covers the same beginner-level material as the Learn to Paddle class in a supportive, social setting.

SUP Flow Yoga
Designed for those already comfortable on a paddleboard, this class blends the serenity of yoga with the natural motion of the water. Flow through beginner yoga poses while floating and soaking in the sounds of nature—an ideal way to unwind and strengthen both mind and body.
For ages 15 yrs. and up. Prior SUP experience recommended. Enroll for SUP Flow Yoga
SUP Learn to Paddle
Perfect for those new to stand-up paddleboarding, this class covers the basics: how to stand, how to paddle, how to turn, and how to safely navigate the water. Instruction is beginner-friendly and led by certified SUP professionals.

Full Moon Night Paddle
Enjoy a peaceful evening on Griffy Lake under the full moon. Participants can paddle a canoe or kayak while experiencing the quiet beauty of the lake at night. Equipment is provided. Bring a flashlight and be ready for a unique night on the water.

Hike & Seek
A program designed for children ages 2–6 with a parent or guardian, Hike & Seek introduces young explorers to nature through guided walks, games, and activities. Each session features a different park.

Turtle Trek
Learn all about turtles at Griffy Lake Nature Preserve, from shell shapes to habitat needs. Includes a short hike to search for wild turtles and a closer look at a live turtle up close.

Pollinator Habitat Workshop
This hands-on workshop covers how to design or improve pollinator habitat at home. Learn from naturalists and biologists while exploring pollinator-friendly plants and techniques.

Nature Play Days
Part of a statewide initiative, Nature Play Days encourage families to enjoy the outdoors together through unstructured play and exploration. Free to attend, with themes and locations rotating.

Nature Break
Recharge in nature with a short hike and magnifier exploration at Rogers Family Park. Ideal for younger children and families seeking a calm, guided nature break.

Night Sky Viewing
Join us at Ferguson Dog Park for an evening of stargazing. Learn about constellations, how to use telescopes, and what’s happening in the night sky.

Moth Night
Step into the world of nocturnal insects. Learn how and why moths are drawn to light and help scientists record species for community science. Includes multiple moth-viewing stations.

Early Risers Bird Hike
Rise early and discover the birds of Griffy Lake with an experienced birder. Learn how to identify birds by sound and sight during this peaceful morning walk.

Hello, Sunshine!
Discover the science and benefits of the sun. Participants use special viewing tools to safely observe solar flares, sunspots, and the surface of the sun.
