Statement from Mayor Hamilton Regarding Convention Center Expansion

Mayor John Hamilton has issued the following statement regarding the Convention Center expansion ahead of the City Council’s special session on December 14:

“I understand that there are those who support the Capital Improvement Board model for the potential expansion of the downtown convention center, and the path of least resistance for me might be to go along with that. But after looking closely at that model and based on the experience of the past several years, I truly don’t believe it’s in the best interest of our community to go that route. This is one of those times well-intentioned people simply disagree. I’m committed to the expansion project, but I will not endorse launching a process that I don’t believe will bring the result our community wants and deserves or putting the project and the community in a long-term disadvantageous and cumbersome position to accomplish that goal.”
