The Department of Public Works directs and oversees the administration and strategic operations of the Animal Care and Control Division, Facilities Maintenance Division, Fleet Maintenance Division, Parking Services Division, Sanitation Division and Street Division.
Department of Public Works is also tasked with providing staffing resources and logistics support to the Board of Public Works, which is the chief administrative body of the City and has control of the day-to-day operations of the Department of Public Works.
The role of the Department of Public Works is to provide essential infrastructure, services, and daily operations to both visitors and the residents of Bloomington in a prompt, courteous, safe, efficient, transparent and cost-effective manner.
Animal Care and Control Division
The Animal Care & Control Division operates the City of Bloomington's Animal Shelter and is the primary provider of animal-related services for Bloomington and Monroe County.
Facilities Maintenance Division
The Facilities Maintenance Division is responsible for the maintenance, repair, and monitoring of City Hall, all Department of Public Works Facilities, Police, and Fire Stations. In addition, Facilities Maintenance provides graffiti removal services and support for the Downtown core area.
Fleet Maintenance Division
The Fleet Maintenance Division is responsible for the maintenance and repair services of over 600 vehicles and specialized equipment. This includes preventative maintenance (both major and minor repairs), emergency call out service and maintaining two fueling sites.
Parking Services Division
The Parking Services Division provides all parking activities, including managing and maintaining the City's downtown parking garages, meter enforcement, offering pay by phone, managing special events, and citing and towing illegally parked vehicles.
Sanitation Division
The Sanitation Division provides curbside collection of trash, recycling and yard waste to single-family residences (4 units or less) that are located within the City limits. Please use the myBloomington tool to find your trash and recycle day.
Street Division
The Street Division provides maintenance and repair for the City's 237 miles of streets. Specific functions include street resurfacing; applying pavement markings; the repair and construction of sidepaths, sidewalks, curbs, accessible curb ramps; snow removal; street sweeping; planning, maintenance, and operation of traffic signals and street signs. In addition, the department provides care and maintenance of trees in the public right-of-way.
