Thanks for reaching out. The current operation provides a short protected left-turn period before the eastbound and westbound through movements begin together. Once the through traffic receives a green light, left-turning drivers can still turn when there is an appropriate gap in opposing traffic.
Because the left turn shares a lane with through traffic, I understand the issue you’re describing when a left-turning vehicle cannot reach the intersection during the protected arrow. Giving the left turn a longer or separate protected phase could help that movement, but it would also require additional signal time and could increase delay for other traffic.
With classes resuming, we’ll keep an eye on how the intersection operates under the heavier traffic. If you continue seeing significant backups or left-turning vehicles consistently unable to get through, please let us know.
