The City of Bloomington permits certain types of metal and plastic plates to be used for the detectable warning surface. Typically we specify metal plates on infrastructure projects that are contracted out because it is typically more durable if it is in a location where it may be run over by traffic more often. Metal plates were specified as part of the Rogers project for this reason. However, city crews typically use the plastic plates when reconstructing curb ramps. Metal plates are removed in certain locations if they are not meeting modern standards in terms of location or dimensions and may be replaced by plastic ones by our crews. Since both are acceptable for use, the important aspect of their installation is that they meet the latest Public Right of Way Accessibility Guidelines.
