City of Bloomington, Indiana

open #210221

City Performance:

Other: An out of town friend of ours was on Kirkwood last night. He had come to spend the weekend with his daughter, a graduating senior at IU. He saw that there was an incident brewing and approached officers, who he states were only on the periphery of Kirkwood. He asked them to enter into Kirkwood as the situation was getting out of control. He, a white man, was told if he felt uncomfortable around black people that he should leave. The police, rather than protecting the thousands of students, of all races and nationalities, chose to stand around until gun violence escalated. I hope that you are all deeply ashamed of your lack of concern for the city's residents. IU students, faculty and staff contribute untold monies to the coffers of the city and I hope that you will be able to come up with some sensible policies to protect IU students so they can celebrate the race and all that they bring to the city.

Thank you for your message. Little 500 brings thousands of alumni and visitors to Bloomington, and Bloomington Police plan for safety well in advance in coordination with IU Police, Indiana State Police, and others. The goal is to protect everyone--students, residents, and visitors. It is not apparent when walking through crowds of thousands of people which ones are which, and we do not treat people differently based on their status. All of the victims in this incident were college-age, though much later IU determined that they were not students themselves. Everyone deserves to be safe. Many police officers were stationed throughout Kirkwood, not just on the periphery. In fact, Little 500 is the busiest weekend of the year for Bloomington Police. When the shooting occurred in the early morning hours, the chief of police himself was only half a block away, along with other officers who were able to respond extremely quickly. Although the incident response worked as it should, of course we all wish that no incidents would occur at all. Open carry is legal in Indiana, despite the best efforts of public safety officials to convince the legislature to vote otherwise, and unfortunately this year guns were brought to the celebration. As we do after every Little 500, we are reviewing, with our public safety partners, the planning and procedures to determine what future improvements can be made, and the investigation into the incident is ongoing.
