Grant properties has been working with the Planning Department to obtain the proper approvals for sign permits at their properties across the City. Every property in the City is allowed to have 3 small temporary signs without requiring a permit: 2 signs of up to 5 square feet in area and 1 sign of up to 8 square feet in area. That includes temporary yard signs. Such temporary signs must be of temporary construction (i.e. not permanently secured to a building or the ground). Additionally, signs smaller than 1.5 square feet in area do not require any permits. Permanent wall sign allowance is based on a property's zoning district and use (i.e. single-family, multi-family, nonresidential, etc.). If you would like to review all regulations for signage in the City, please consult the City's Unified Development Ordinance (UDO) Section 20.04.100 [Signs] beginning on UDO page 233, pdf page 241. The UDO can be found at https://bloomington.in.gov/planning/udo or as Title 20 of Bloomington Municipal Code (BMC) at https://library.municode.com/in/bloomington/codes/code_of_ordinances?nodeId=BLOOMINGTONMUCO. If you would like to determine a property's zoning district, input the address into the City of Bloomington Zoning Map at https://bloomington.in.gov/arcgis/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=1d20622e5bc84ea8ae98041c27b610b2.
