Position Description

Helps coordinate the organization and development of the Urban Greenspace volunteer invasive plant management efforts (Adopt-A-Greenspace program, Weed Wrangles and more). These duties include but are not limited to:

  • Recruits and trains Adopt-A-Greenspace (AAG) volunteers and maintains communication with volunteers on a regular basis
  • Organizes and leads volunteer workdays
  • Actively participates in the MC-IRIS and Bloomington Parks and Recreation Department partnership (e.g. Reduce One Invasive Species Challenge, Native Plant Sale, etc.)
  • Attends public meetings, outreach events, trainings, workshops and conferences as needed
  • Uses GPS software to map volunteer progress on Parks properties
  • Collaborates with staff to create Long Term Management Plans for Parks properties (esp. AAG adopted locations)
  • Reports regularly to the Urban Greenspace Manager regarding status of volunteer programs, data organization, and more
  • Other duties as assigned (i.e. assist Urban Greenspace Landscaping and/or Vegetation Management crews)

 

Training/Special Skills

Familiarity with natural resource management practices; knowledge of local forest, prairie and riparian ecosystems; and plants invasive to this area. Ability to provide hands-on educational opportunities to the public.

  • Possess or obtain OISC Certified Pesticide Applicator/Registered Technician License within 30 days of hire
  • Must have a valid Driver’s License and maintain a good driving record
  • Possess or obtain current Adult, Child and Infant CPR and First Aid certifications within 30 days of hire.
  • Direct experience in organizing successful meetings and events, with a proven ability to coordinate, organize and foster effective communication among diverse groups.
  • Demonstrate a positive attitude and team mentality.
  • Demonstrated competency or proficiency in the application of diversity, equity, inclusion and justice principles.
  • Demonstrated experience in problem solving and being proactive in the face of challenges
  • Ability to think strategically and prioritize activities to achieve maximum effectiveness
  • The ability to communicate effectively, both internally and externally, in person and in written form and the ability to work independently.
  • Experience with Google Docs and Microsoft Word.
  • Must be self-motivated, and have the ability to interact and work well with the public and other employees.
  • Must be reliable, punctual, have the ability to follow oral and written directions, and be capable of facilitating to multiple user groups and education levels.
  • Ability to safely use hand tools, and operate vehicles.

 

Physical Effort

Must be in good physical condition. Moderate physical effort is exerted by the employee in the field. Ability to hike and work in moderately difficult terrain for brief periods.

 

Working Conditions

Employee performs duties both in an office setting and outdoors, in varying weather conditions, and is periodically exposed to ticks, poison ivy, stinging insects, extreme temperatures and humidity. Safety precautions, including consistent use of Personal Protective Equipment, must be used to avoid injury.

 

Hours

Hours and job duties vary with the season. Evenings and weekends are required. Maximum 25 hour work week.

Salary

$21 per hour
