Trails

Case Date:
5/11/2014

During the past week, I've noticed that Clear Creek Trail and certain parts of the B-Line Trail (southernmost) have become exceptionally buggy. I've lived in Bloomington since 2009 and used both trails regularly since then -- and this is the time of year when the mosquitoes, gnats, and other critters tend to increase in population. But this year is the WORST I've seen it in my 5-plus years here. In those areas where it is possible, it seems some spraying/other mitigation is in order to keep the critters in check! It got so bad last week I literally cut one of my runs short (despite wearing hat, sunglasses, and Deep Woods Off), drove back to my neighborhood on the east side, and finished the run on the streets over there (where there is no trail, but far fewer bugs). In addition, I am aware that a good portion of the Clear Creek Trail runs adjacent to some sewer lines. But usually, only in 1-2 places do you ever get a whiff of it and usually it's very brief. No big deal. Well, this past week, much of the lower half of the trail (the area south of where the overflow water tends to flood the trail after heavy rainfall) has carried a very consistent and moderate "poo" smell. And I'm pretty sure it's not coming from the four-legged running companions who like to use the trail as well and do their natural business. I'm not sure if there is a way to mitigate the smell somehow or if the sewers are unusually backed up or what -- but the smell has become such in past week where it might deter some from using the trail (if the bugs don't chase them off first) unless something is either done or the smell subsides naturally. Again, I've lived in B-Town for 5-plus years and have never encountered the smell on the CCT being near this strong -- or nearly continuous along the southern half -- as it is now. Just thought I'd bring this to your attention; I know that in talking with other runners/walkers/joggers, they are having bug/smell problems as well. Thanks for your time and attention to this issue -- Bill H.

Called and spoke with Judy Seigle regarding the poor condition of RCA Park. There are 2 local high school rugby teams using the field for practice and the grass is so high they can't use it. She said they had reserved the field with a BPR staff member, but couldn't say who it was.

Hi, Seven Oaks Classical Charter School is having a pig roast and silent auction at Bryan Park in June for a fundraiser. I looked through the rules and regs but didn't see anything about having a band/music. *Are those who rent a space at the park allowed to have a music band? Please let me know. Thanks, Linda

Hello, I am writing to this email address since I've been told that trees between a sidewalk and the street are considered street trees, and are managed by the City Parks Urban Forestry Program. I last year bought a house at 3216 E Winston St.. At that time the two trees to the east of the house between the sidewalk and the street looked unwell, but I thought it might be because the summer before had been exceptionally dry, and I knew the house had been vacant (and so presumably not necessarily well cared for) for some time. However, it's now apparent that one is dead and the other is nearly so. Can you let me know if the city is responsible for these trees? And if so, if there's another department I should report this to? Thank you very much for any assistance you can give. Sincerely, Tracy Whelan

Last night in the pouring rain we hit a pot hole that was full of water and it flattened our driver side front tire and we will know later today if it damaged our wheel. Our car is only about 3 weeks old. Purchased new at Toyota. What is our recourse on the pothole Pothole located between CVS (South) and Chase Bank (South). What is our recourse on this unrepaired pothole that damaged our tire and possibly our wheel on my new car?

Turning left off of Bethel Lane onto Old 37, a pot hole, just at the crest of the hill, right hand lane, broke off the stabilizer bar on my 98 toyotat 4runner. Just got it back from Thorton's welding, and it cost me $1000. Pot hole is now filled with orange spray paint beside it. Is there any road hazard re-imbursement I am entitled too? Thank you for your time.

Traffic Related Complaints

The stop sign going south on Jackson at the corner of Jackson and 3rd street has been removed. The other two stop signs on third street and going north on Jackson have a small sign beneath them saying, "Three way stop." Either the stop sign on Jackson should be replaced or the signs beneath the other two stop signs should say something like, "cross traffic does not stop."
