There needs to be a four way stop sign at this intersection. It’s currently not safe for cars driving northbound on Hawthorne, as you can’t see very far to the left and cars come flying down 1st street at high speed (way over the speed limit) due to the lack of stop signs along this stretch of the road. This in of itself is a safety issue for the many families living along the road but also for the bikers and pedestrians trying to cross along that Hawthorne greenway bike route. Likewise, when approaching this intersection going southbound on Hawthorne it’s very hard to see to the left. You end up having to nudge the nose of your car into the intersection to even see when you ca. try to cross. I’ve personally had a couple of close calls with speeding cars on 1st. This needs to be addressed soon or there is likely to be a serious accident at this intersection!

Comments for the Engineering Department for their preparation in advance of the May commission meeting at city hall regarding safety improvements at the intersection of East Morningside Drive and Smith Road to encourage southbound traffic on Smith Road to stop at the Morningside Greenway: My observation in proximity to the stop sign disclosed that visibility of the sign is compromised by tree branches that have grown into the right of way to the extent of overhanging part of the southbound traffic lane. Limited visibility of the stop sign from the railroad underpass has the visual effect as if the sign were at the end of a long tunnel. Trimming the trees west of the sidewalk would have an immediate positive effect on safety at the Greenway intersection. Adding a STOP AHEAD flashing caution sign midway between the underpass and Morningside would be helpful. Flashing signs with solar powered lights are available on the internet for under $1,000 which seems reasonable for safety in comparison to medical expenses after a collision and the recent significant Greenway cost of sidewalks, speed calming bump outs and asphalt speed cushions. The Morningside and Smith intersection is well known for southbound traffic ignoring the stop sign. Commuters connecting from 10th to Third Street have grown accustomed to watching the stoplight at Third Street rather than respecting the Morningside stop sign. This notorious traffic hazard is deserving of a trifecta solution, including trimming trees, adding a caution sign, and replacing the stop sign, which in its present bent condition does not provide adequate reflectivity at night.

Street parking is legal in front of my home but it is not well marked. Traffic regularly stops behind my parked vehicle and honks because they believe there is someone in the drivers seat. We need painted parking spots that identify the lawful parking.

Two items:
1) street signs have been down here for over a year and have been reported. If this was a different core neighborhood these would have been replaced in a more timely manner.
2) these roundabouts and various “traffic calming” items that bike/ped role is popping up and putting throughout communities are not equitable in design. Why are these and other lower income areas only being given primarily concrete or similar design. We want equitable design and vegetation like the roundabout for renwick. Why is our neighborhood treated worse because of historic inequities? It seems this outreach group never actually listens to all voices for planning changes. We want equitable design and implementation, not just ugly “solutions” that are in reaction to an accident.

The left turn only lane signage is missing and the street paint for the left turn only is no longer visible. Basically there is no way to know that the left lane from Grimes to Walnut is left turn only. The sign for Walnut St is sun bleached and almost impossible to read as well.
