Hi there, I have noticed a large increase in homeless activity in Bloomington this year. In the past, homeless individuals have largely remained in Seminary Park. Now, I see them camped in the park by Hartzell’s on Kirkwood, up by the square further north on Walnut, and even in Bryan Park. Homelessness is a complex problem and individuals in this situation face unfathomable challenges, but many of my peers and I feel their presence in social areas of Bloomington has negatively impacted the safety and cleanliness of the city. Just yesterday, I witnessed a homeless man harass a girl sitting in Brother’s Bar and Grill by slapping the window as if he was slapping her bottom through the window. It made me feel unsafe in my Bloomington home. Similarly, the park near Hartzell’s on Kirkwood is no longer an inviting place to eat ice cream with friends due to the mess left by homeless populations in this area. I am so sorry for their situation and challenges they face, but I do not want the homeless epidemic to impact the value and vibrance of the many lovely green spaces in Bloomington. For these reasons, I wanted to express my concerns about the spread of homelessness in Bloomington this past year and implore you to seek solutions for the issue. I am not an expert in social services or rehabilitation, so I am not sure if there are solutions to this problem, but I hope the city of Bloomington will take my concerns to heart to both help the homeless and improve the safety and well-being of Bloomington. I was towed out of my IU dorm (I have a parking permit, I was simply outside the allowed hours to park in that specific spot) and I’m not exactly contesting the tow, which was non-consensual by the way, but the fact that I am being charged well over $200 for fees for the tow them housing the car for mere hours. I read the city law and it says something along the lines of I shouldn’t be charged greater than $135 for a tow, so im a bit confused here where the extra hundred dollars or so is coming from. I also spoke with some city of Bloomington parking officials and the company that towed me, Wray automotive, doesn’t have a license apparently, so I’m not sure what’s up with that. She told me to file this u report. Please get back to me when you can, thank you!
The BHSS football games are absurdly loud. We should not have to hear their announcements indoors with the windows closed from over a mile away.
The basement of Twin Recreational Facility consistently smells of sewage. We reported to staff who state they know but do not know the source and suspect it is related to sewer back up.
There are creepy handwritten signs on Kirkwood today (Mon morning). There is one directly across from Uptown on a trash can, another further towards campus, and the 3rd one on my route is on the pizzaria corner. They are threatening in tone; they say people in the city should leave town as it's "the time of vengence." The Pizzaria one says to be alert because enemies are waiting to devour us like lions. Upsetting.
Multiple helicopters flying low for an extended period around Broadview neighborhood and Switchyard Park after dark, causing our house to vibrate and frightening our animals. Multiple explosions heard.
I have a very old soft maple tree in my front yard. I would like to have it pruned but am unsure of who's responsibility it is for 2 reasons: 1 being there are major power lines that are resting on the limbs (close to the trunk of the tree) and 2, I believe the tree is located within 6 ft of the city street and was told that the city owns the 6 foot easement between streets and properties? I would like to have it pruned evenly because of tree's age and weight distribution. Could someone contact me about this?
